What to Include in a Burn Kit?

13Views

Having a first aid kit is essential whether it is in your home or workplace. Accidents can happen anywhere so you need to be prepared to deal with them. Burns are a common occurrence when it comes to natural disasters as well as day to day emergencies.

While your first aid kit should have the basics when it comes to common injuries, it should also have some treatment for burns specifically. A burn first aid kit will have nitrile gloves. You need to ensure your hands are clean when you are treating a burn victim. And washing hands properly can be difficult especially in the face of a disaster. In this situation you can use nitrile gloves to ensure there is no contamination. When there is a first or second degree burn, you need to run the area under cool water for about half an hour. There may be situations where this is not possible such as in the aftermath of an earthquake where clean water is inaccessible. Also, it depends on the area that is burnt. It can be difficult to do this if the burn is located on the head.

In situations where you can’t use running clean water, you can use a cool compress. The reason to use this is that the heat will be drawn into the compress in order to promote aster healing. You can also fill a container with water to soak the burn if it is located on your feet. But you should take care never to use ice water on the burns as it can cause further damage. If you have suffered a first degree burn where the blisters have not broken, you can use aloe vera gel. This helps the burn from drying out and it can help the healing process. Sometimes the blisters may be broken and when this happens, you are at risk for an infection. So you have to select an antibacterial ointment to be used on the burned skin.

Once you have run the burn under cool water and an ointment has been applied, you have to apply a nonstick bandage on top. There are many brands that manufacture this so you can check online for a store to buy this. There can be different sizes of wounds so you need to have different sizes of bandages in the kit to make sure it can cover the whole area of the wound. There are also special burn dressings that are already treated with an ointment. If there is dirt or debris on the wound, you will need to clean it with a cotton swab. This will help you to apply the antibacterial ointment as well.

But make sure that you don’t use cotton balls as this can leave pieces of cotton stuck to the wound. Once the nonstick bandage has been applied to the burn, you have to wrap it loosely in gauze. It is not recommended to wrap it tightly as burns can swell and circulation to the area can be restricted. Include some pain medication in the kit as well to manage the pain. If you need anything stronger than over the counter medication, you will need to visit a doctor for a prescription.
